If there is to be an NBA season then this week is critical as the NBA owners have given the players until Wednesday to accept the deal that is on the table. NBA commissioner
David Stern didn?t officially call it an ultimatum but that is pretty much what NBA player?s union attorney Jeffrey Kessler called it.
Wednesday Deadline
NBA owners are giving the players a few days to decide on the deal that is on the table. They have said the current deal that is being offered will only be on the table until Wednesday and then it comes off. The current deal is basically one that is a 50-50 split in basketball related income. Once that deal comes off the table the owners have said they will drop their next offer to 47%. There is a group of about 10-14 owners that didn?t even want to offer the players the 50-50 split so this current offer by the owners is as good as the players are going to get.
Players Holding Together for Now
The NBA players are sticking with NBA player?s executive director Billy Hunter and union president Derek Fisher but that solidarity may not last. They are taking the hard line for now. “The players will not be intimidated,” attorney Jeffrey Kessler said.
What Happens Now?
If there is going to be any NBA live betting action this season then the players will have to relent and accept the current offer that is on the table by the owners. The players have talked about decertifying as a union but that option is not going to get them anything. Decertification would almost guarantee that the 2011-2012 NBA season would be lost. The process takes time and it could be over a month before the process is completed. Many NBA owners don?t believe the players have the fortitude to decertify and risk losing an entire season.
If the players don?t realize that the 50-50 split in revenue is the best deal they are ever going to get then we probably won?t be seeing NBA basketball this year. Wednesday?s deadline may truly be a real one in terms of saving the 2011-2012 NBA season. The problem for the players is that their leadership has no intention of bringing the owner?s offer to a vote. “There is not a deal we can present,” Fisher said, and “that’s a call we’ve been elected to make.”
